Taiping is World’s #3 Most Sustainable City

And Perak has amazed us yet again in all its charm!

Recently awarded Top 100 Sustainable Destinations for the Best of Cities category during the International Tourismus-Börse (ITB) tourism expo in Berlin, Germany, Taiping secured a spot in line – coming in third after Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, and Vancouver, Canada.

The event hosted by Green Destinations Foundation, a non-profit foundation for sustainable tourism, encourages a healthy practice of tourism management – recognizing cities across the globe that reflect leadership and management skills in urban sustainability and balanced tourism. Thus, ensuring that there is a consistent flow in quality, attractiveness and sustainability of a destination.

Among listed in December 2018 as 100 Sustainable Cities, Taiping was the only named city in Malaysia to have won the prestigious international award. And despite its natural wet weather conditions, it has successfully made it to the world’s eco-tourism radar.

The award was received by Taiping Municipal Council president Abd Rahim Md Ariff who dedicated it to the local community.

“This is the first time we received a prestigious international award. This achievement is due to the hard work of the community and all relevant governmental agencies.

“The council always work hard to make Taiping a popular tourist destination,” said Abd Rahim as reported by The Star.

Also present at the event were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and State Tourism Committee Chairman Tan Kar Hing.

Previous awards received include:

  • Best Destination Manager 2016 (Tourism Promotion Board for Asia Pacific Region)
  • Malaysia Tourism Council Gold Award 2017 (Best Heritage and Eco Travel Destination Category)
  • Malaysia Tourism Council Gold Award 2018 (Best Tourism Promotion Campaign)
