On 27 February 2020, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had announced travel incentives for Malaysians as part of the Economic Stimulus Package 2020 to help mitigate the impact on the tourism industry that has been severely affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
These incentives include digital vouchers worth RM100 (for domestic flights, train travel, and hotel stays) and personal income tax relief of up to RM1,000 for expenditures related to local travel expenses. The government has also exempted 6% service tax for domestic hotels from March 2020 to August 2020.
Following the announcement, various travel operators have shifted their focus on domestic travel market for their Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign that targets 30 million tourists and RM100 billion in tourist receipts.
On the other hand, taxi, tourist bus, and trishaw drivers, as well as tourist guides, will get a one-off RM600 payment. Further info on how to claim these incentives has not yet been released.
